What is AI4SOCIAL+?

AI Readiness for Social Impact - or short AI4SOCIAL+ is a project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Programme to support the AI transformation in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The AI4SOCIAL+ project advances AI readiness and machine actionability within the European Open Source Cloud ecosystem (EOSC) through three actions:

  • building a common AI Readiness Framework to assess the adoption of AI across research lifecycles with best data practices and stewardship;
  • bringing tools for machine-actionability in federated data repositories;
  • implementing a user-friendly and portable AI-ready infrastructure platform;

These efforts ensure that the benefits of AI reach all areas of scientific research. Starting with the Social Sciences and Humanities, AI4SOCIAL+ will enable effective and positive societal change.

Who are the AI4SOCIAL+ partners?

The project has partners all throughout Europe and the Barcelona Super Computing Center (BSC) will take over the coordination. For all partners, see the project website.

How does Galaxy contribute?

Galaxy Europe, together with COMPSs and Onedata, will be the infrastructure backbone of the project. In two Work Packages (WP 9 and WP 10), we will develop an AI-ready infrastructure platform that enables the effective adoption of AI in science while incorporating open science values to support the project’s 5 use cases. Galaxy will also play a prominent role in Use Case 2, AI in Historical Archives, supporting the digitisation of the medieval collection of the Arxiu Històric de Protocols de Barcelona (AHPB) through the development of tools, workflows, and training materials. Additionally, we will support the dissemination of tools, analyses, workflows, and more generally, scientific artefacts developed via the Galaxy Training Network with the project’s Stream E for training and education.

What’s next?

To continue our work from the online kickoff, we will meet with all project partners in Barcelona in November to continue bringing great tools and services to researchers from the Humanities and Social Sciences. Stay tuned for further insights!
